"Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper."
2 Chronicles 20:20b
THE PROPHET'S REWARD by Dr. John David Kirby - Part 4
I want to expound on the five things that the Shunemite woman did for the man of God.
First, the number “five” in the Bible is the number for “Grace”. Grace is the unearned, undeserved, and unmerited “favor of God”. The woman “favored” Elisha and in return God would “favor her mightily”!
The first thing the woman did was have a chamber or room built for the man of God. This speaks of five powerful things. Number one: “The Holy of Holies”.
The Bible teaches us that God instructed Moses to build a Tabernacle for Him to dwell in. Moses was to “curtain off” a certain section in the Tabernacle for God Himself to dwell in. This was the Holy of Holies.
33 And thou shalt hang up the vail under the taches, that thou mayest bring in thither within the vail the ark of the testimony: and the vail shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy.
God Almighty dwelt between the wings of the Cheribums above the Ark of the Covenant (or Testimony) in the Holy of Holies. This was the place of God’s Presence.
The woman built a special place for the Presence of God to dwell in her house! The Bible tells us that wherever the Presence of God is, blessings are! Miracles are! Healing is! In the Presence of God is the fullness of joy, and pleasures for evermore!
Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
King David found out that wherever the Ark of God (the Presence of God) “rested”, blessings from God abounded!
1 Chron 13:13-14:1
So David brought not the ark home to himself to the city of David, but carried it aside into the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.
And the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house three months. And the LORD blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that he had.
David saw the blessing of the LORD on Obed-edom’s house and all that he had, because of the Ark (Presence) of God. So he prepared a place for the Ark of God in Jerusalem and went to Obed-edom’s house to retrieve it.
1 Chron 15:1
And David made him houses in the city of David, and prepared a place for the ark of God, and pitched for it a tent.
1 Chron 15:25
So David, and the elders of Israel, and the captains over thousands, went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the house of Obed-edom with joy.
David knew what he wanted, so he went after it and he received it!
“David got what he wanted from God, when he did it God’s way!”
Number two: “The Secret Place of the Most High”.
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
The woman made a decision to “build” a special place for the Presence of God to dwell in her home. She wanted to “dwell” in the Presence of God.
She wanted the Presence of God to continually abide in her home, so she could continually abide in His Presence! I encourage you today to “build” a special place in your home to worship and commune with the Lord. A special place where you can abide in His Holy Presence. Make your home a Holy habitation for the Presence of God! The woman understood the blessings that came with the Presence of God.
“She wanted God’s Presence bad enough to do what she had to do to get it!”
Number Three: “The Secret Place of Thunder”!
Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of thunder: I proved thee at the waters of Meribah. Selah.
The woman knew that God was a God who heard and answered prayer.
The woman knew that God would answer her prayers out of that secret place. She knew that God would answer Elisha’s prayers out of that secret place too. She knew that God would bring deliverance for her and her loved ones through and to this “secret place” of prayer.
“Thunder” speaks of power! She knew that God’s power would be demonstrated and manifested in her home. Not only His provision and protection, but also His mighty power!
“Where the Presence of the LORD is there is Power!”
Number four: “The prayer closet”
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
The woman knew that what would come out of that chamber would be powerful prayers from the man of God. She knew that her life and the lives of her family and friends would be greatly influenced by the prayers that would be prayed out of that room. She knew that the prayers of the man of God would be answered and that her prayers would be answered too!
She made “room” for the man of God in her house. She made “room” for the Presence of God in her house. She made “room” for the prophet of God!
Above all, she made “room” for God in her house!
Number Five: “The Ministry Of The Watchman”
There is a very important aspect to what the woman said in 2 Kings 4:10, concerning the words “on the wall.” These words speak of the ministry of the watchman. One of the titles for a prophet is “watchman.”
This is a crucial role that the prophet plays in the Kingdom of God today!
So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me.
Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the LORD shall bring again Zion.
I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not silence,
The watchman would take his place on the top of the wall of the city and “watch”. He would watch to see who was coming and who was going. He would watch to see who was coming toward the city and notify the authorities below. If the people coming toward the city were friendly they would open the gates of the city and welcome them in. If the people were an enemy army coming against them, they would prepare for war. If the one coming was the king, the whole city would quickly prepare for his arrival and the celebration of his return! The duty of “the watchman/prophet” is to watch and see what and who is coming toward the people of God, and notify them accordingly. He is, more importantly, to watch and pray. To see and hear what the Lord is doing and saying. He is to inform God’s people concerning what the Lord is saying to him for the people individually, churches, ministries, and the Kingdom at large. He is to take his rightful place on the wall of the city of God, and fulfill his commission to his King, and to His Kingdom!
1 Peter 4:7
But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved.
I believe that this was a very “strategic” place for the woman to have the chamber built for the prophet. It speaks of the “watching” aspect of the prophet and his ministry. It speaks of the woman understanding exactly “who” Elisha was, and exactly “what” he was called and anointed to do.
She understood that if she “received” Elisha as a prophet of the Lord, that she would “receive” “the prophet’s reward”. That is, “all the blessings and benefits of the prophet’s office”. All that the prophet walked in would be made available for her to partake of and to be blessed by.
This is very important for us to understand today. If a person or a church only receives a prophet as a teacher, evangelist, or pastor, they will be missing out on the blessings of the prophetic “office”. Even though the “prophet” may flow prophetically, I believe that the power of the prophet’s mantle will be in greater demonstration and operation where the prophet is “recognized” and “received” as the “ministry office” of “Prophet”.
He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet's reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward.
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
The woman was taking full advantage of the gifts and anointings that Elisha flowed in. She understood that Elisha would be able to “see” from the wall.
1 Sam 9:9
(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)
