"Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper."
THE PROPHET'S REWARD by Dr. John David Kirby - Part 1
2 Kings 4:8
And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.
The story begins with a man of God named Elisha traveling to the city of Shunem. Elisha, whose name means “Jehovah is Salvation”, travels to Shunem which means “Rest”, “Quiet”, and “Fortunate”. Here we begin to see some important “keys” to walking in the blessings of God. The first one is that Elisha was a “true” man of God. He was a “true” minister of God. Elisha was a “true” prophet of God. It is extremely important that you “discern” the man of God in your life. When I use the phrase “man of God” in this book, this can also refer to a “woman of God”, so just use the one that is appropriate for you.
Jesus said: “Ye shall know them by their fruits.”
Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
The Bible exhorts us to “know” or “perceive” them who labor among us and are over us in the Lord.
1 Thess 5:12-13
We must no longer just “know” people according to their “flesh”, we must “know” their spirit, by the Holy Spirit!
2 Cor 5:16a
Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh:
This is a very crucial truth for your life. You must be “hooked-up” with a “true” man of God to insure the blessings of God. You must be linked up with a “Godly” leader. If you are not “linked up” with a “true” man of God, I encourage you to pray and ask God to show you who you should get “linked up with”. There are many “true” men of God out there. There are many great churches with a “true” man of God as the Pastor. There are also many great Apostles, Prophets, Teachers and Evangelists in the Body of Christ, who are “genuine” men of God that you can “link up with”. When you find a “true” man of God, begin to “bless him” and watch the blessings of God begin to flow into your life.
When you “partner” with a “true” man of God through prayer and financial support, you put yourself into position to become a partaker of all the gifts, anointings, fruit, and revelation that the man of God that you are “connected” with walks in! You also “activate” God’s law of sowing and reaping into your life. (Gal. 6:7) It is a “covenant relationship”.
“A covenant relationship is a special relationship of giving and receiving”
The second “key” is that you live in Shunem! Now you say, “How can I do that?” “I can’t just pick up and move!” No, I am not talking about the “physical” Shunem, I am talking about the “spiritual place” called Shunem. The place of “Rest”, “Quiet”, and where you are “Fortunate”. You must stop “striving” and come to the place of “Rest”. So many people are running here and running there, always chasing, but never finding. God wants you to enter His “Rest”. God wants you to begin to “live” in a place where you can get “Quiet” before Him.
“To live in His peace and to live in His rest will yield His blessing!”
Let’s look at this a little closer.
Number One: REST IN THE LORD
Number Two: GET QUIET BEFORE THE LORD
If you will begin to do these first two principles, you will begin to walk in the third one.
Number Three: YOU WILL BE A FORTUNATE ONE
Let me put it this way, if you will rest in the Lord, and get quiet before Him, you will be one of the fortunate ones! Just think of how fortunate you are to be able to have intimate fellowship and communion with the Almighty God!
"The blessings of God flow from intimacy with God!”
The story goes on to say that in Shunem “was a great woman”. This woman was great for a number of reasons. One reason was a physical one. She was a woman of great means and wealth. She was a very influential woman. The other reason was a spiritual one. She had the ability to “see” what others could not see! She had “perception”, or the ability to see the unseen! She could see beyond the veil. She could see past the “flesh”. She could see the spirit and heart of Elisha and “discern” that he was a “true” man of God, with a “genuine anointing” from the Lord. Perception and discernment are critical to our success in these last days. When Jesus was asked by His disciples what the “sign” of His coming and the “end of the age” was, He said this: “Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.” (Matthew 24:4-5) God, knowing our need for perception and discernment gave us a special “Gift” or “Manifestation” of His Spirit, called “the discerning of spirits”. (See 1 Co. 12:10) I encourage you to begin asking God for this gift to begin to manifest in your life today.
We desperately need to “discern” or “distinguish” the spirits of the people who are leading us and the people who are in our lives.
In the letter of First John, God instructs us to “test” or “try” the spirits.
1 John 4:1
Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
I cannot put enough emphasis on this point. This is not only crucial, it is “vital” to your success as a believer in this life!
"We must “learn” to discern so we are not deceived!”
